The Owl Service by Alan Garner

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. WhiteThe Owl Service is a fantasy novel written by English novelist Alan Garner and was first published in 1967. In this book, Garner re-enacts an ancient Welsh myth with young Roger, Alison and Gwyn as the main characters instead.

When asked about her future prospects, Alison could only quote what her mother expected of her. What group of people in that society and ours does Alison represent? Are Roger and Gywn any different from her? How would you describe the relationship between the three main characters, and what were some of the marking events that led to its evolution into the tragic love triangle?

How was the issue of class prejudice tackled in the book? How was this linked to national and cultural identity to create the tension in the story? What did it reveal to you about the societal setting of that time?

What did the ending of this book imply and reflect about the social politics of this story? What was the effect of such a shocking ending? Do you think Blodeuwedd was put to rest once and for all, or will the cycle repeat itself? What makes you think so?
