Carrie’s War is a children’s novel written by English novelist and children’s writer Nina Bawden. This award-winning piece of historical literature digs into the past and talks about the experiences of two siblings, Carrie and Nick as they are evacuated from London to Wales amidst the Second World War.

Why do you think Carrie decided to return to Wales at this time? How would you describe Carrie’s relationship with Nick? How do you think Carrie’s role and responsibilities changed as the story progressed, especially after they parted with their mother?  

Mr Evans is found to be a controversial character in the story. Recall his personality, his attitude to others, the wrongful conviction he bore and the way he died. How did your opinions and feelings on him change over the course of events? What sort of person in life does he represent?  What is the purpose and effect of creating such a tragic character?
