Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. WhiteJourney to the River Sea is an exciting adventure novel written by Australian-born British writer Eva Ibbotson and published in the United Kingdom by MacMillan in 2001. The story features the adventures, friendship and sense of belonging that revolved around thirteen-year-old English girl Maia upon migrating to the Amazon.

In which aspects do Clovis and Finn complement each other? What does Brazil and England represent to the different characters, and what effect does this have on the way Maia views these countries and societies?

The Carter’s house was burned down later because of the spilled oil from the twins’ lamp. However, how did Beatrice and Gwendolyn’s greed and suspicion help set up the stage for the accident? What does this fire represent to Maia and what impact does it pose on her? Earlier in the book, when commenting on the Carters’ lifeless house, Miss Minton said that “people make their own worlds”. What did she mean by that? How do Maia, Clovis, Finn and even Miss Minton herself ‘make their own worlds’?

As the story ended, what was Miss Minton implying when she said that “we are all going home”? Why did she believe that they are all ‘going home’?
