Belgium cartoonist Georges Remi first wrote one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, The Adventures of Tin Tin under the pen name Hergé in 1929. Today, this series consists of as many as 24 Franco-Belgian comics in more than 70 languages. Hergé brings young readers from different cultures on all sorts of thrilling adventures with the brave Belgium reporter Tin Tin and his faithful dog Snowy.
Judging from his ideas, actions and personality traits, what sort of person do you think Tin Tin is? How would you describe the relationship he has with his fellow companions such as Snowy, Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus? Do they make a good team, and why?
In the book, Captain Haddock evolved from a weak alcoholic into a heroic character upon discovering his ancestor’s treasures. What is the significance of this transformation?
The earlier stories of The Adventures of Tin Tin were sometimes accused for displaying animal cruelty in hunting for game and stereotyping Africans as ignorant and primitive. Which side of this argument do you take, and with what justifications? For any piece of work that indeed contains such elements, what sort of influence do you think it can pose on its young readers?
