Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. WhiteCharlotte’s Web is an award-winning children’s novel written by American author E. B. White in 1952. This classic children’s literature tells the story of how barn spider Charlotte writes praises on her web in dedication to Wilbur, a livestock pig who hopes to dissuade the farmer from slaughtering him.

Some of the words Charlotte weaved on her spider web included ‘some pig’, ‘terrific’ and ‘humble’. What is the significance of these words? How are they perceived differently by the different characters in the story, and what does this reflect about them as individuals?

This novel revolves around both the human and barn community. What sort of relationship do these two communities share, and how were they similar or different from each other? As the story progresses, how do they influence each other?

How do the different encounters help shape and develop Wilburn’s character? Based on his reactions upon encountering death at different points in the story, how does his personal beliefs and outlooks on life change, especially after Charlotte’s sacrificial death? How does this set him as a role model for the young readers of this book?
